Lost Skills: Leather Smithing Class

For the past month or so, the Saint Augustine Amphitheatre has been holding a "Lost Skills" series.  This has included fermented beverage making, natural dye processes, leathersmithing, and more.  Last night was the final class of the series: a leathersmithing course.  They have been incredibly popular and each class has sold out.  Alex and I were fortunate enough to attend last night along with our good friend Aslyn, her mom, and about 15 others from the local community.

Over a span of three hours, we were taught a variety of techniques and skills including hand stitching, edging, riveting, etc.  We can now distinguish hides vs. skins, types of cuts, and got some insight into traditional and historic tanning processes.

With our newfound knowledge, we were given that task of making our own belt!  The following pictures are just a glimpse of the progression of our class.

We had a really great night!  The students were eager to learn.  The teachers were patient and helpful.  The Amphitheatre provided snacks and tea.  We definitely weren't left wanting.  Aslyn, Alex and I are excited to see what other classes will be included in the next "Lost Skills" series!
